Peterborough Transit is continuing to modify its service to efficiently meet the essential needs of its riders as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.

By-reservation transit service to essential workplaces

Beginning March 31, 2020, Peterborough Transit will deliver dedicated by-reservation transit service in the evening to serve riders travelling to and from work at essential workplaces as identified in the list of essential workplaces by the Province of Ontario, such as healthcare and the supply of critical products such as groceries and medication.

The service will operate using accessibility vans between 7:20 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. seven days a week. In line with Peterborough Transit’s current physical distancing measures, there will be no fare transactions for the service.

“We are pleased to add this service to help workers get to and from essential workplaces while our regular service hours are temporarily shortened,” said Laurie Stratton, Transit Operations Manager. “Transit staff members appreciate the patience of the community as we launch this important service to support those who are supporting all of us.”

Riders will be required to request their travel arrangements at least 24 hours in advance of their trip. The booking process will confirm that travel is to and/or from work at an essential employer and identify any accessibility requirements.

To allow for physical distancing, each van will carry a maximum of two customers at a time. Due to reduced seating capacity and fluctuating service demands, trips may be limited based on the availability of vans and may be subject to drop off/pick up time adjustments. Please remember that seat belts must be worn on all Peterborough Transit Accessibility vans.

Reservations will be accepted starting Friday, March 27, 2020. Please contact Peterborough Transit’s accessible booking line between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 705-740-6797.

Traditional transit service

Customers are reminded to use transit for only essential travel. Non-essential trips should be avoided. Individuals should not ride the bus if they are ill, suspect that they have been exposed to COVID-19, or have returned from international travel within the last 14 days. When riding the bus, please observe recommended travelling and hygiene etiquette including:

  • Board at the rear of the bus (except riders who have accessibility requirements)
  • Stand behind yellow/red line to give the driver space
  • Be courteous to fellow riders and move to an open space if available
  • Practise proper hand hygiene and avoid touching your face or other surfaces especially after contacting commonly touched surfaces like handrails, vending machines and poles
  • Cover your mouth and nose every time you cough or sneeze using a disposable tissue if possible or into your upper sleeve
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds - use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

The COVID-19 situation is evolving. New decisions may be made affecting municipal services and facilities. For an up-to-date list of affected municipal services and facilities, please visit www.peterborough.ca/covid19.
