Doors Open Peterborough will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018. This year, the event
highlights the City’s exciting industrial past with the theme “Peterborough Works: Industry
Past and Present.”
Peterborough is a city with a rich industrial past and a vibrant present with many
interesting businesses that call this city home. 12 sites will be open to the public on May 5,
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many of the locations will feature special displays, demonstrations,
and tours. A complete listing of sites, including hours and facilities, is available on the
Doors Open Peterborough web page. There will also be free rides on an historic trolley.
Doors Open is a free day of fun for people of all ages.
Doors Open Peterborough, in partnership with Peterborough Transit, is pleased to offer
free bus passes for Doors Open visitors. In addition, Doors Open Peterborough is
partnering with the 2018 Shifting Gears Challenge to encourage people to cycle to
participating sites. Bus passes and maps outlining a suggested cycling route will be
available at all participating sites. This year, Doors Open will also be partnering with Jane’s
Walk Peterborough, a citizen-led walking event that aims to get people out to explore their
communities. Jane’s Walk will be holding two walks on May 5 that complement the Doors
Open theme.
“We are very excited to be offering a unique Doors Open experience focusing on
Peterborough’s industrial history. The organizing committee has had the pleasure of
working with members of our local business community, natural heritage organizations,
local owners of heritage homes, and Parks Canada representatives to plan an event that
will give visitors a unique opportunity to explore Peterborough’s unique legacy of built,
cultural, and industrial heritage,” remarked Stewart Hamilton, the Chair of the Doors Open
Peterborough committee, “From East City to our historic downtown, enjoy an historic
industrial walking tour. We have all seen those historic photos with trolleys on George
Street. Now is your opportunity to take part, so hop on the trolley!”
