Residential street in Peterborough

Drivers in the City of Peterborough are urged to learn about and follow on-street parking restrictions that are put in place to support road safety and ensure adequate access for emergency vehicles and school buses.

Enforcement activities in school zones, residential neighbourhoods and downtown have returned to normal, with infractions ranging from $25 to $300.

Full details on parking regulations in Peterborough can be found online at

  • If there are no signs, parking is permitted for a maximum of 3 hours on Peterborough streets, 24 hours a day.
  • Parking or stopping is not permitted at any time in No Stopping zones or within 10 metres of an intersection. For safety and visibility reasons, at some intersections signs are posted to restrict parking and stopping up to 30 metres from the intersection.
  • Bus Stops are only for authorized buses. No parking of any vehicle is allowed in a designated bus stop.
  • Vehicles must not be parked within three metres of a fire hydrant (measured along the street line).
  • Vehicles must be parked at least two metres away from a driveway or laneway.
  • Vehicles cannot park on or block on any portion of a sidewalk. Vehicles also cannot overhang a sidewalk.
  • Use of accessible parking spaces requires a visible and valid Provincial Permit posted in the vehicle. Parking fees must still be paid.
  • Commercial Loading Zones are for commercial motor vehicles only, with a 15-minute limit, while engaged in the loading or unloading of goods.

“The start of school is a busy time on City streets, with school bus traffic and kids walking or biking to school,” said Councillor Don Vassiliadis, co-chair of the transportation portfolio. “Safety is our top priority, and we need to keep streets clear for drivers to have unobstructed sightlines and for access by emergency service vehicles.”
