Peterborough, ON – Peterborough Mayor Diane Therrien and Selwyn Deputy Mayor Sherry Senis announced, during a media conference on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, the participants for the panel discussion at the opioid crisis forum on July 11, 2019.

The panel members are:

  • Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health, Peterborough Public Health
  • Deputy Chief Tim Farquharson, Peterborough Police Service
  • Dan Farrow, paramedic, Peterborough County-City Paramedics
  • Alex Bierk, resident and artist who has lost friends to opioid overdoses
  • Sally Carson

Senis and Therrien are co-hosting the forum. Peterborough-Kawartha MP Maryam Monsef and Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith have confirmed their attendance.

Community support will help the Peterborough region access provincial government assistance for the opioid crisis response, Senis said.

“The County and the City are definitely morally invested in finding solutions to this crisis,” she said. “The opioid crisis has been increasing, not only in Peterborough but through Ontario and across Canada. The senior levels of government need to step up to provide solutions and funding for this crisis.”

Therrien pointed to the need to bring together both professionals in the field as well as people with lived experience for this discussion with the community.

“We need to take immediate action on the opioid crisis. We have lost too many lives. We need to work together, as a community and as a region, with all levels of government to find solutions,” Therrien said. “This is one goal of the forum. The other goal is to break down the stigma around mental health and addictions so that people feel comfortable and able to seek help. We are grateful to our community partners who will be at the forum to provide information and support for those that need it.”

The forum is being held at Market Hall, 140 Charlotte St., starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2019. The panel discussion starts at 6:30 p.m. Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience, depending on the amount of time remaining.
