Peterborough, ON - On Friday, April 16, 2021, the Province of Ontario announced additional measures under the provincewide shutdown to help stop the spread of COVID-19, including new restrictions on outdoor recreational amenities.

Parks and trails remain open for walk through, under the updated provincial regulations.

The City’s playgrounds remain open. While the updated provincial regulations as posted on Saturday, April 17, 2021 include the closure of playgrounds, Premier Doug Ford has said that the regulations will be changed to allow playgrounds to remain open.

“While we must follow Public Health guidelines to stop COVID spread, we can still safely get outside on our network of trails, sidewalks, parks and open green space,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, Arenas, Parks, and Recreation Portfolio Chair on Council. “Fresh air, exercise and sunshine are critical to our physical, spiritual and mental well-being. Sports fields and gatherings are restricted right now. But individual and household outdoor time is allowed and necessary. Please look after yourself and your family while respecting others in our open green spaces. Be safe. Be kind”

Outdoor exercise is permitted under the provincial Stay-at-Home order while respecting public health measures. Outdoor gatherings are prohibited, except with people from your same household – or if you live alone, with one other household.

When using parks, trails and playgrounds:

  • Stay at least two metres apart from anyone who isn’t from your household
  • Wear a mask if physical distancing may be challenging
  • Avoid high-touch surfaces
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
  • Stay home if you’re sick

The provincial regulations close other outdoor recreational amenities, including:

  • All outdoor sports facilities and multi-use fields, including:
    • Baseball diamonds
    • Soccer fields
    • Frisbee golf locations
    • Tennis, platform tennis, table tennis, and pickleball courts
    • Basketball courts
    • BMX parks
    • Skate parks
  • All portions of parks and recreational areas containing outdoor fitness equipment
  • All outdoor picnic sites and picnic tables in park and recreation areas

During the provincewide shutdown and Stay-at-Home order, City services are continuing to operate with many shifting to only online or by-phone service with the closure of City Hall and other administrative offices for in-person visits.
