Peterborough, ON – Join the conversation on how a trail and shoreline improvement project could be designed between Haggart Street and the point of Del Crary Park to begin a section of the “Little Lake Loop”.

The Otonabee River Trail and Shoreline Improvement Project is a section of the Little Lake Loop, which is a primary objective of the Little Lake Master Plan.

Traffic calming, additional active transportation routes, enhanced recreational zones and shoreline improvements including erosion protection, are key components of the planning for the section between Haggart Street and the point of Del Crary Park.

The planning for this project is in the early stages. The City’s consultant has begun background investigations and conceptual planning work.

“I’m excited about expanding the Little Lake trail loop to better connect our downtown with the scenic views surrounding the heart of our city, where the river meets the lake. I encourage everyone in our community to share their insights and engage with us to create a space that reflects our shared vision,” said Councillor Alex Bierk, a Town Ward councillor.

“Having a lake in the middle of our city is a unique opportunity for people to be active in a beautiful, refreshing natural setting, while experiencing the incredible views and where we can often feel the mist from our Centennial Fountain. Truly, ‘Outside the Ordinary’,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, Community Services (Recreation and Parks, Fire Services, and Arenas) Co-Chair.

The City is requesting input from interested parties concerning how the space is currently being used, what issues are present in the area, what improvements should be proposed and what challenges may require special consideration related to this project in advance of the conceptual planning phase, and before formal public engagement sessions.

The project aims to provide significant enhancements to the shoreline including:

  • Erosion protection and improvements to aquatic habitat along the shoreline
  • The addition of active transportation facilities
  • Improved public gathering points and lookouts
  • Improved access to Little Lake for recreational activities
  • Repairs to failing or aging infrastructure along Crescent Street
  • Traffic calming measures
