National Indigenous Peoples Day Proclamation - June 21, 2024
Whereas: the City of Peterborough acknowledges we are on the treaty and traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg;
Whereas: National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, as well as the strength, resilience, and love that Indigenous communities and peoples continue to have after generations of colonial oppression;
Whereas: For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year;
Whereas: Indigenous peoples have made and continue to make valuable contributions to Canadian society; and
Whereas: The City of Peterborough remains committed to upholding the calls of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and moving Reconciliation forward in our community;
Therefore, be it resolved that I, Jeff Leal, Mayor of the City of Peterborough, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2024, as National Indigenous Peoples Day in the City of Peterborough.
June is National Indigenous History Month. Mayor Jeff Leal issued a statement on National Indigenous History Month to encourage residents to take time to honour and celebrate the invaluable contributions, rich histories, and vibrant cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
