Peterborough, ON - Wearing a face covering is mandatory on Peterborough Transit buses starting Saturday, August 1, 2020, following the Peterborough Public Health directive.

Customers are asked to respect that some people can’t wear a face covering and aren’t required to under the Public Health directive. Exceptions to the Public Health directive include:

  • A child under the age of two years or a child under the age of five years either chronologically or developmentally and he or she refuses to wear a face covering and cannot be persuaded to do so by their caregiver;
  • A person incapacitated and unable to remove their face covering without assistance;
  • Any person who cannot safely wear a face covering because of medical reasons, such as, but not limited to, respiratory disease, cognitive difficulties or difficulties in hearing or processing; and
  • For any religious reason, the person cannot wear a face covering.

The complete Peterborough Public Health directive on mandatory face coverings, including information on exceptions and frequently asked questions, is available at

To help raise awareness of the face covering directive, Peterborough Transit will be holding promotional events and handing out a limited supply of disposable face masks.

Other measures put in place to protect the health of Peterborough Transit customers and staff include enhanced cleaning measures of commonly touched surfaces, reduced capacity on buses to support physical distancing, plexiglass barriers for drivers, and route changes to reduce crowding at the terminal and on board buses.

Wearing a face covering is not a substitute for hand washing and the use hand sanitizer before and after riding the bus. Customers are reminded to avoid touching their face and to cough/sneeze into a tissue or sleeve.
