Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement in celebration Filipino Heritage Month, which is observed in Canada during June each year:

Filipino Heritage Month, recognizes, celebrates and raises awareness about the Filipino community in Canada and their valuable contributions throughout Canadian history.

This month gives us the opportunity to celebrate the Filipino culture, traditions and languages as well as the many contributions this community has made to the social, economic and cultural fabric our country.

The 2024 Filipino Canadian Heritage Month theme is Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, reflecting on the different cultural practices of the three major island groups of the Philippines.

The Filipino community is one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. Canada is home to nearly one million people of Filipino descent who are making a positive impact from coast to coast to coast in many forums including healthcare, business, politics, sports and the arts.

In June and beyond, let’s support this community by sharing, promoting and preserving Filipino heritage and culture through cultural, artistic and traditional events. I encourage everyone to learn more about this community and celebrate its many accomplishments and contributions.
