Bike Month is rolling

Peterborough, ON - June is Bike Month in Ontario, and Peterborough has plans to fully embrace it. With the love of cycling locally, the City of Peterborough has planned Bike Month activities to interest residents and help  keep those wheels rolling.

In Peterborough, cycling is increasing in popularity both for transportation and recreation. This growth in cycling is somewhat spurned by the pandemic, but also fuelled by our increasingly extensive and enjoyable bike network.

The activities planned in June include registering your bicycle with Project 529, the largest bike registry in the world, to a fun Bike Month on-line trivia quiz by the Bicycle Advisory Committee about local cycling and trails. Registering your bike(s) with Project 529 assists with the recovery of stolen bicycles and if you place the sticker on your bike, can discourage bike theft. Project 529 takes advantage of social media to help get the word out about local stolen bicycles and police can use the registry to find original bike owners. Residents who register their bicycles this June qualify  to win a quality bike lock. The stickers, known as shields, are available at B!KE, located at 293 George St. and GreenUP located at 378 Aylmer St. N.

During Bike Month, residents can tap into local cycling and trail lore by taking the online quiz and watch for our weekly infrastructure announcements at www.peterborough.ca/cycle. Local stories will be featured from people participating in the Rack and Roll program that was part of Shifting Gears in May. In this program, people turn their recreational bicycles into practical vehicles for running errands. Each of the 40 participants had a rear carrier installed on their bicycle and received a bicycle bag that fits onto the carrier, making carrying groceries or other items much easier.

Residents can share your cycling stories during Bike Month with the tag #ptbobikemonth in social media.
