Peterborough, ON - Peterborough Police Service is providing dedicated, increased policing in the area of Murray and George streets to Hunter and George streets east to the Otonabee River due to increased calls for police service in the vicinity of that area.

Peterborough Police Service and the City are working together to implement the additional patrols in the interest of the health and safety of the community. The City has approved increased funding to Peterborough Police Service for the additional service on an interim basis.

City officials met with representatives from Peterborough Police and the Downtown Business Improvement Area on Friday to discuss the situation and the need for an increased police presence.

Peterborough Police enforce the Criminal Code of Canada, the City’s Public Nuisance By-Law that prohibits certain activities such as public defecation and urination, and the prohibition on public intoxication.

Calls for service to the police in the area where there will be increased police patrols have been related to noise complaints, threats, public intoxication, harassment, bail violations, and assault.

Anyone requiring police assistance should call 705-876-1122 or dial 9-1-1 for an emergency.

Recent events in various parks and open spaces in the City underscore the advisability of a stand-alone municipal by-law to more clearly establish rules for the shared public use and enjoyment of the City’s parks and open spaces and for the protection of the natural environment.
