Peterborough, ON – The first phase of the downtown streets repaving project is now complete, including freshly surfaced streets and line painting along sections of George, Water, Brock, Sheridan, Simcoe and King streets.

A portion of the work was completed during nighttime hours to reduce traffic disruptions through the City’s central area and enhance support for downtown businesses during the project.

The project included removing and replacing storm and sanitary sewer frames and grates, removing and replacing curbs, milling existing asphalt, base asphalt repairs where required, repaving streets, applying pavement markings, and other related work.

The project does not include a full reconstruction of the streets or address drainage issues; rather, it specifically addresses deteriorating surface conditions.

Provincial infrastructure funding was used to help fund the road surface work in the downtown and other locations in the City in 2024. The $2.3-million downtown streets repaving project includes $1.85 million in funding from the Government of Ontario under the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.

In an effort to expedite the project’s progress, certain concrete work may commence this fall which will coincide with the watermain reconstruction, prior to the resumption and completion of the overall project in 2025. The central area resurfacing scope in 2025 will include sections such as Water Street, Murray Street, McDonnel Street and Parkhill Road West with particular focus on the George Street and Water Street intersections.
