Peterborough ON - Emergency financial support is available to Peterborough City and County residents who are in financial crisis as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and who can’t access other financial support.

Under the provincial Emergency Assistance program, individuals who have been laid off or who are unable to work due to COVID-19 may receive up to $1,170 and families with two children could receive up to $2,000 for a 48-day period, if eligible. The money can be used to cover needs such as food, rent, medicine, and other essential items.

People who aren’t currently able to access the federal Canada Emergency Response Benefit and have limited access to other income or assets can apply for assistance through the provincial Emergency Assistance program.

“The City of Peterborough is working closely with our provincial and federal partners to help residents who are dealing with financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mayor Diane Therrien said. “We want people to stay safe and healthy.”

The Province expanded the eligibility for the Emergency Assistance program last week to allow people to use it for a greater period of time with support for up to 48 days and to access the program more than once in a six-month period.

Applications for emergency assistance can be completed online or by phone. While the Province is putting in place a more streamlined and accessible application that will be available soon, the City’s Social Services division can assist with applications and enquiries. Please call 705-748-8830 then choose menu option 2 or call toll free at 1-855-738-3755 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday for further information or to have an application completed.
