Pearson Day Care

Peterborough ON – The Province has expanded eligibility for the Emergency Child Care Plan service that provides child care at no cost to parents for children of provincially identified essential workers.

City of Peterborough Social Services administers the provincial Emergency Child Care Plan for the City and County of Peterborough.

The groups that have been recently added to the eligibility list include:

  • Individuals serving vulnerable populations (e.g. people working in Children’s Aid Societies);
  • Staff who work in shelters serving homeless populations;
  • Emergency response and law enforcement sector staff (e.g. First Nations constables, critical staff operating the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre);
  • Power workers;
  • Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing;
  • Non-municipal water and waste water employees; and
  • Federally employed staff including RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency officers and Canada Post employees.

The eligibility list has been gradually expanding, taking a phased and measured approach based on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and the needs and capacity of communities.

The Emergency Child Care Plan service for provincially identified essential workers is provided at no cost to parents. There are 114 spaces for children from infants to 12 years old. To be eligible, the family must have no other option for child care.

People from the identified workplaces can apply for the emergency child care plan online at www.peterborough.ca/childcareforessentialworkers.

Workers eligible for the Emergency Child Care in Peterborough at this time include:

  • Regulated health care professionals and unregulated health care providers working in health care delivery (e.g. workers in hospitals, clinics, public health, long-term care, retirement homes, independent health and assisted living facilities)
  • People who work for manufacturers of pharmaceutical products and medical supplies
  • Emergency services workers (e.g. police, fire, and paramedics)
  • Coroners
  • People who work in a correctional institution, contractors who provide services to correctional institutions, probation and parole officers
  • Animal welfare inspectors
  • People who work at not-for-profit organizations that provide critical personal support services in home or residential services for individuals with physical disabilities
  • People who work for organizations that provide home care services or personal support services to seniors and persons with disabilities;
  • Municipal essential staff, such as:
  • Peterborough Utilities (e.g. water and electricity workers)
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Sanitation
  • Social services (e.g. Ontario Works case workers)
  • Public Works
  • Municipal and community staff supporting homelessness services

The complete list of eligible workers is available on the Province of Ontario website at www.ontario.ca.

The provincial government has allowed for the limited operation of licensed child care centres and licensed home child care that are approved to operate under the emergency child care plan. No other licensed child care providers are allowed to be open at this time, except through the Emergency Child Care Plan.

The number of spaces is limited for health and safety considerations in the child care centres. There is a maximum of six children and two care providers in each room – and not more than 50 people, including children, staff and parents, in a building at any one time.

The application process is centralized through the City of Peterborough. Applications can only be submitted through the centralized application process – they will not be accepted by the approved individual child care centres that are operating under the Emergency Child Care Plan.

The COVID-19 situation is evolving. New decisions may be made affecting municipal services and facilities. For an up-to-date list of affected municipal services and facilities, please visit www.peterborough.ca/covid19.
