Community Consultation: Multi-storey affordable housing development on Monaghan Road

Peterborough, ON - A multi-storey affordable housing development would be built at 681 Monaghan Rd. by the City of Peterborough’s new housing development corporation. A drop-in meeting with the community to share the design and talk with the project team will be held at the Healthy Planet Arena banquet hall from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
“Our community is taking action to create more affordable housing. The new development on Monaghan Road along with projects such as the 85-unit second phase of the Hunt Terrace development on Bonaccord Street are essential to the health of our community, providing homes for individuals and families,” said Councillor Keith Riel, Chair of Council’s Housing Portfolio.
The City of Peterborough is the service system manager for housing for the City and County of Peterborough. It administers funding for about 2,000 social housing units owned and operated by 16 non-profit organizations and Peterborough Housing Corporation.
The property on Monaghan Road is between Gillespie Avenue and McKellar Street. Preliminary plans are for a building that could be six-storeys with 53 units, including 37 one-bedroom units, 11 two-bedroom units, and 5 three-bedroom units.
The project is in the preliminary design stage. Construction could begin by late spring-early summer of 2023 and be completed by summer 2024, depending on funding applications.
Information on the project is posted at connectptbo.ca/affordable-housing-project, where residents can post comments and ask questions about the affordable housing development. The project team will respond to questions submitted through the project page. Submitted questions and responses may be shared for others to see on the project page without identifying the person who submitted the question as a way to help others who may be asking the same questions.
To prepare for the new affordable housing development, the existing former office building is being removed. The City acquired the property in November 2020 with the intent to develop it for affordable housing.
The City has awarded the contract for the demolition of the existing building on the site to Salandria Ltd., with demolition expected to be completed by mid February 2023.
