This page was updated on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 to reflect the new date of June 25, 2020 for the closure of George Street at Townsend Street.

Peterborough, ON – George Street will be closed at Townsend Street from April 28, 2020 until June 25, 2020 for bridge repair work where the road goes over the Jackson Creek outlet into Little Lake.

The closure will prevent traffic from travelling straight through the section on George Street between Rink and Sherbrooke streets. While access to the businesses on George Street will remain open to traffic, northbound and southbound vehicles will need to use detour routes to get around the bridge work.

The work is part of the Central Area Flood Reduction Project that includes building a large new storm water diversion sewer under Bethune Street to Townsend Street then across to the outlet at Little Lake. Construction includes bridge repair work under George Street at Townsend Street as, well as paving of that section of road.

The work at the Jackson Creek outlet and George Street bridge is scheduled to be completed by late summer of 2020.

Originally, the City planned for mostly lane reductions or occasional, brief closures on George Street at Townsend Street during construction. With the reduced traffic on George Street during the COVID-19 emergency, a full closure will cause less disruption than under normal conditions.
