Winter trails

deep snow and a plowed trail at Rogers Cove with the sun rising over Little Lake

During winter, 404 kilometres of sidewalks and 42 kilometres of paved trails through greenspaces and alongside roads are plowed and maintained for everyone's enjoyment. Unpaved trails are kept in their natural state in the winter, so be aware of conditions that are variable.

As always, pedestrians have the right-of-way on trails. Keeping to the right leaves space for faster people to pass with a safe berth. Many trails are not lit, so bring your lights!

Trails that are maintained in the winter:

  • Parkway Trail between Fairbairn Street at Jackson Park to the Riverview Park and Zoo
  • Rotary Greenway Trail from Sophia Street to Trent University
  • Rotary Greenway Trail Link across the river north of Parkhill Road near George Street to Bethune Street
  • Willowcreek Trail between Ashburnham Drive and Willowcreek Boulevard
  • Trans Canada Trail – all paved portions from Technology Drive and through downtown to Bonaccord Street, including paths along the river through Millennium Park. Trails in Jackson Park are not winter maintained.
  • Crawford Trail between Crawford Road and Monaghan Road

Winter maintenance of sidewalks and trails

  • The City maintains all sidewalks and paved trails for use throughout the winter. Sidewalk plowing and sanding routes are designed similar to road priorities, with sidewalks along busy streets cleared first, along with streets near the hospital or with schools, and along Transit routes.
  • It will typically take 48 hours to complete all sidewalk and trail routes after the last precipitation has fallen.
  • We currently have 404 kilometre lanes of sidewalk and 42 kilmetres of paved trails that are maintained for four season use.
  • There is a charging station for mobility devices available on the Rotary Greenway Trail near the London Street footbridge.
  • Call Public Works at 705-745-1386 if you have a concern about maintenance along a sidewalk or paved trail.
