Heritage Hunt - August 1 - September 16th, 2023

The Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (PACAC) launches an  annual Heritage Hunt contest inviting residents to test their knowledge of Peterborough’s architectural heritage for the chance to win great local prizes.

The contest involves identifying architectural details on buildings in a defined area of the city. All details are visible from the sidewalk and both sides of the street are in play.

Doors Open Peterborough

Doors Open Peterborough is a city-wide event in which private and public heritage buildings open their doors (either physically or digitally) to the public for viewing for free. Funded by the Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (PACAC), Peterborough’s event is part of Doors Open Ontario in partnership with the Ontario Heritage Trust, and is a great opportunity for community engagement and education about our built and cultural heritage.

Doors Open Peterborough 2023 will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Doors Open Map + Walking Tours

Guided tours

  • Tour Peterborough's historical downtown with local historian Don Willcock starting at Confederation Square at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
  • Local historian Gord Young will lead a walking tour of Peterborough's former North Ward. Tours start at 180 Barnardo Ave. departing at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Experience Jackson Park through a new perspective and explore its plants and what they can teach us according to Anishinaabe teachings. Join a guided tour or use the map below to go at your own pace.

  • Junaid Khan, a Pakistani-Canadian ecologist and Anishinaabemowin learner, will lead tours starting at the park entrance at 610 Parkhill Rd. W. at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. - meet near the picnic tables.

In the spirit of GreenUp’s Shifting Gears, Doors Open Peterborough is encouraging visitors to leave their cars at home and explore Peterborough’s heritage and cultural landmarks on foot or by bicycle this year.

House History Workshop - June 22, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. 

The House History Workshop provided an overview of helpful tools, resources, and strategies for researching the history of Peterborough’s houses and buildings.

Friendly experts from Trent University, The Peterborough Public Library, Peterborough Museum & Archives, Trent Valley Archives, and the City’s Heritage Preservation Office were present to discuss what’s in their collections and how to access them.

The House History Workshop aims to inspire attendees to start their own research projects using the knowledge gained in the workshop.

You do not need to live in or own a heritage home to participate. Prior research experience is not necessary. Get ready to start exploring!

The House History Workshop was a free event held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Peterborough Lions Club Community Centre, 347 Burnham St.
