Parking

Downtown parking sign

The City of Peterborough enforces parking restrictions in Peterborough 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The parking restrictions may or may not be signed.

The holiday parking program sponsored by Wolfe Personal Injury Lawyers features free two-hour parking at all downtown municipal parking spaces from Friday, November 29 to December 31. Parking fees that are voluntarily paid at pay-and-display machines, parking meters or through the HotSpot App during the free two-hour period will be donated to Kawartha Food Share.

Paying parking tickets

Penalty Notices/parking tickets can be paid online, by mail or in person at City Hall.

More about parking downtown

On-street parking downtown

You can park on-street for a maximum of 2 hours and pay using a meter or a pay and display machine with coins. You can also pay using the HotSpot App with credit or debit.

HotSpot Parking App

The HotSpot Parking App is available in Peterborough at all meters and Pay and Display Machines. The HotSpot Parking App has a monthly or annual fee for the convenience of paying for parking on a mobile device. Hard copy parking tickets are still issued. They are not issued through the mobile app.

HotSpot gives you more convenience when parking by:

  • A notification of when your meter is going to expire
  • The ability to add more time to your parking spot (up to the maximum time limit)
  • A code for the area you parked in
  • You do not have to use the mobile app in order to pay, standard methods of payment for parking remain unchanged
  • Parking is free evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. HotSpot will not process payment during these times
  • The App allows you to end your parking session at any time and get a refund for the remaining time.
  • HotSpot collects revenue from monthly and annual fees; they do not receive a percentage of the meter revenue. This new technology has no cost to the municipality.

If you experience a problem with the HotSpot app, you can contact HotSpot directly 1-855-712-5888.

Simcoe Parking Garage payment system

In August 2022, a new automated parking control system was activated in the Simcoe Parking Garage. This system includes gates controlling entry and exit from the garage. The new system will provide customers with a number of options to pay for their parking.

Customers need to have their ticket validated before exiting the parking garage. Validated tickets are inserted into the machine at the exit, which will raise the gate arm for the vehicle to leave the parking garage.

Customers can pay by debit or credit card at the machine at the exit by inserting their ticket at the exit gate.

There are also payment machines located in the parking garage where customers can pay for their parking before proceeding to the exit gate. Customers using this option are advised to pay for their parking as they return to their vehicle before departing the parking garage. There is a 15-minute period provided after validating a ticket to allow customers to return to their vehicles and proceed to the exit gate.

New signs are being installed to guide customers to pay stations, which are fully accessible.

To pay by cash, customers insert their ticket at the pay station located on the lower level by the elevators and the walkway to the transit platform. This station also accepts payment by debit or credit.

There is also a new pay station on Level 2A, near the rear stairwell, that accepts only debit or credit for paying for parking and validating parking tickets prior to exit.

Customers can also pay for their parking using their HotSpot account and HotSpot readers are provided on all pay stations for customers to activate the gates using their phones.

Monthly pass holders will be issued a new proximity card or be able to obtain an RFID tag to install on their windshields, which will automatically open the gates upon entry and exit from the garage, as long as their monthly permit is active and is renewed prior to the start of the next month. There will be a deposit required for the new proximity cards or RFID tags, which will be refunded when the customer no longer requires a monthly parking pass. Parking staff will be reaching out to current monthly pass holders to arrange for issuing the new cards or customers can call the Parking Division at 705-742-7777 ext. 2802 to purchase a monthly parking pass.

Where to park overnight

Free overnight parking is permitted at all City parking lots, King Street Parkade and Simcoe Parking Garage between the hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Vehicles parked overnight at either parking garage can obtain a gate arm ticket upon entry to the garage to be used for a free transit ride home.

When parking downtown is free

On-street parking is free evenings after 6 p.m., on weekends and statutory holidays. The first hour at the King Street Parkade and Simcoe Garage is always free.

Parking in the King Street Parkade and Simcoe Garage is free overnight, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Accessible parking spaces

Accessible parking spaces require a valid Provincial Accessible Parking Permit clearly displayed while parked. Those without a valid permit will be fined $300. There are accessible parking spaces along the streets and in all public parking lots and garages. All spaces are marked with signs and street parking spaces also have blue meters. Payment is required.

Parking in winter

Winter parking rules

From December 1 to April 1, parking is prohibited on all City streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. The fine for a violation is $25.

No parking and snowstorms

When snow-clearing operations are taking place, no parking or stopping of a vehicle is permitted on any city street. Snow-clearing usually takes place between midnight and 8 a.m. The fine is $80 and your vehicle will be towed away. Vehicles north of Parkhill Road will be towed to Milroy Park, 242 Milroy Dr. Vehicles south of Parkhill Road will be towed to Morrow Park, 171 Lansdowne St. W.

A public service announcement will be made to advise that vehicles must be removed from city streets throughout the day and/or evening. During snowstorms, free overnight parking is available in municipal parking garages and surface lots. Drivers can use the parking garage entrance ticket for a free ride home on Peterborough Transit.

Vehicles must be picked up within 24 hours. All unclaimed vehicles will be towed to an impound yard at the owners expense.

Penalties for parking tickets

The following are the penalties for parking infractions in the City. Payment of tickets is required to renew your driver's license. Parking tickets can be paid online or at locations listed on the back of the ticket. If you would like to dispute your ticket or penalty notice, please visit our Administrative Monetary Penalty System page
