Peterborough Transit is offering a pilot ride-share transit service called PTBOnDemand

PTBOnDemand trips will not follow a set route and times like our normal services. When you try to book your trip, the program will look at your request and it may pair you with other customers travelling in the same direction. The route may change each day depending on the other requests travelling at the same time. Each trip proposal will offer the nearest pick-up and drop-off stops available at the time of your request. These trips will serve bus stops with traditional bus stop signs plus some additional roads in the community using extra locations that do not have a sign.

Peterborough Transit is using ride-share software from Via Transportation to provide this service with convenience and efficiency.

Getting started

To give you the most control over planning your trip download the PTBOnDemand app from the app store for your Apple or Android phone.

Customers will be able to:

  • book the next trip available using a smartphone
  • book same-day trips by calling our Reservation Team at 705-745-5801 from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Trips are typically booked based on a departure time, or customers can ask for the trip to be booked with an arrival time at their destination stop. When booking an arrival time, we recommend that customers include a 15-minute buffer in case of delays. Customers calling in are encouraged to book their return trip at the same time, if necessary.

This system is organized to track passenger destinations and number of riders. For these reasons we are unable to accommodate walk up customers who are not scheduled on the planned trip.

Ready to travel using the app?
  • The app will look for the next trip available within a 30 minute window of your request - the app will not allow you to book trips further in advance. If a trip is unavailable, try to book again later.
  • Every time you are ready to travel, set your trip pick-up and drop-off locations and indicate how many people are travelling with you.
    • The system will then try to create a ride proposal for you. You can then accept it or choose not to.
    • The system will show the route number sign that you should look for on the front of the vehicle.
  • If you book your trip using the PTBOnDemand app, you will be able to track the real-time location of your vehicle and receive constant updates on when you will be picked up and dropped off.
Heading to the stop

Customers who book a trip using the app will be given an estimated time of when the vehicle will be at the pick-up location. Real-time tracking of the vehicle is available when customers are connected to the internet. Customers should be at the location at least 5 minutes before the time shown.

Customers who book a trip by phone will be given a 30-minute time window when the bus will be expected at the pick-up location. Customers should be at the location at least 5 minutes before the earliest time provided.

Fares
Normal transit fares will apply and transfers to other routes will be available and accepted.
Cancellations
We hope that you will not need to cancel your trip, but we know that sometimes plans change. Please cancel the trip using the app or by calling the Reservation Team at 705-745-5801. By cancelling the trip ahead of time you allow us to carry other people or make trips faster for others using the service.
