Handi-Van Service

full bike rack

You can qualify to take the Peterborough Transit's Handi-Van if you cannot take the regular buses due to a mobility impairment. The service is provided door to door and all trips are made by making a reservation. Our buses can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters that don't exceed 36” (90 cm) x 48” (120 cm). Our Handi-Van lifts can accommodate a maximum combined weight of 700 pounds (317 kg).

You must be registered as a Handi-Van user before making a reservation for a ride. Read this section carefully for information on how the Handi-Van works.

Making a reservation

A reservation must be made for each trip you would like to take on the Handi-Van. Call 705-745-5801 to book or cancel a trip. Office hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 8:20 p.m. Trips may be booked up to two weeks in advance. Passengers should be prepared to be flexible and plan alternative dates/times in the event that a prior booking has occurred. Same day requests may be accommodated if space is available. Trips booked on the same time and destination each week are treated as reserved. All other trips are booked on a "first-come, first serve" basis. Drivers cannot accept bookings.

Cancellations

As soon as you know it is necessary to cancel a reservation, phone 705-745-5801 or 705-745-0525, giving your name, address and trip date. Early notice may permit other passengers to use your reservation time. Drivers cannot accept cancellations.

Failure to cancel

Should you forget to cancel, or the driver arrives and you are not there, the driver will submit a "No Show" report. In fairness to others, it could be necessary to discontinue service to passengers who frequently forget to cancel their reservations.

Who can ride a Handi-Van?

You must be registered and approved to ride the Handi-Van. Telephone 705-745-5801 for an application or pick one up at the Simcoe Street Terminal. The application must be filled out and signed by you and your health care professional. Return it to the Simcoe Street Transit Terminal for registration.

Assistance available

Drivers will escort passengers to and from street level doors. If there is more than one step at departure or destination places, wheelchair users must arrange to have another person available to assist.

Persons who assist passengers may ride upon payment of the regular fare, and should be booked at the same time as the passenger.  If a passenger requires a support person, you can apply for a support person pass that will allow your support person to ride for free.  Remember to book a space for your support person and that there is only one support person permitted per passenger.
