The Solicitor/Prosecutor will assist the City Solicitor and the Associate City Solicitor to provide a wide range of legal services for the City including as lead counsel in the prosecution of cases before the Ontario Court of Justice for offences under the Provincial Offences Act and Contraventions Act (Canada), representing the City as lead counsel on matters before all levels of Courts and Tribunals in Ontario and assisting the City Solicitor and Associate City Solicitor in the provision of legal services to City Council and staff. Assist the City Solicitor to supervise the Assistant Prosecutor/Screening Officer.

Qualifications:

This position requires an individual who has a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a recognized university and is a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario. In-house legal experience with a municipality would be an asset. Minimum five (5) years of significant and demonstrated court room experience in the prosecution of municipal and provincial offences in the Ontario Court of Justice and as counsel before various administrative tribunals and Ontario Courts; extensive knowledge and understanding of the jurisdiction, procedures, practices and operations of the Provincial Offences Court and the ICON (Integrated Court Offences Network) system. Comprehensive knowledge of the Provincial Offences Act, the Municipal Act, 2001 (municipal by-laws), Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, Liquor Licence Act and all related regulations; demonstrated knowledge of the theory and practice of advocacy, relevant provincial statutes and municipal bylaws relative to prosecutions and appeals, including the relevant sections of the Constitution Act, 1982; demonstrated ability to deal appropriately with contentious situations and to exercise discretion, judgement, diplomacy, integrity and confidentiality; excellent oral and written communication skills combined with tact, persuasiveness and integrity to work effectively with the judiciary, other prosecutors, defence counsel, enforcement agencies and the general  public; computer literacy at a proficient level utilizing Microsoft Software applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and scheduling software; excellent organizational/multi-tasking skills and an ability to assess priorities, work independently to meet required deadlines with conflicting demands and changing priorities; demonstrated ability to research and investigate issues and resolve problems; knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service, communication, judgment and conflict resolution, professionalism and business ethics, initiative and self management, accountability & flexibility. Ability to work outside regular business hours as required.

Salary:

$109,068 - $119,219
