Job Details

The Manager, Cultural Services, is responsible for managing strategies, events, and programs that engage artists, the arts and culture sector, and the broader community. They oversee and support the planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation of the culture and tourism activities of the Cultural Services Division.

The position provides comprehensive oversight of the City’s Cultural Tourism and Public Art portfolios, which includes both internal and external events. This position also manages the City’s various arts programs and strategic initiatives including the Culture Council, the Advisory Committee, and the Public Art program, which help contribute to the overall cultural vitality of Peterborough.

The position is responsible for managing key community partnerships in relation to events and arts programs and working collaboratively to advance cultural economic development strategies and priorities. This position is also responsible to provide support to other division management and act as back up, as required; including Peterborough Public Library, Art Gallery of Peterborough, Peterborough Museum and Archives, and Riverview Park and Zoo.

Qualifications

  • Requires a degree in a related field, such as Cultural Studies, Arts Education, Events Planning & Management, Community Economic Development, or Public Administration.
  • Minimum of five years experience gained through progressively responsible positions related to arts and/or community development, program delivery, public art, administration, and policy development in a municipal context including at least three years of supervisor experience within a unionized environment.
  • Requires excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Requires well-developed communication, facilitation, negotiation, and public relations skills to build effective relationships within the corporation and throughout the community.
  • Demonstrated excellence in project management
  • Requires the ability to problem-solve beyond conventional methods, champion and manage change, gain the cooperation of others, and build confidence among peers, City Council and the community.
  • Should have a creative/innovative focus on service delivery, a commitment to continuous improvement, respect for the diversity of opinions and perspectives, and be comfortable with a certain level of ambiguity and constantly changing priorities.
  • Creative thinking and sound decision-making skills, while able to balance problem solving with risk management
  • Knowledge of public sector initiatives, policies, programs and legislation related to cultural development and creative industries
  • Working knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal government acts and legislation, including occupational health and safety, employment standards, and human rights act preferred
  • Respectful of cultural diversity and supportive of broad-based inclusion
  • Required to obtain and maintain satisfactory criminal record check
