Hiring Process

Cenotaph

The City of Peterborough follows a standard hiring process to make sure we evaluate all candidates in a fair, equitable manner.

Step 1: Job application

If you meet the qualifications, apply for job opportunities based on the instructions in the posting. There are several ways to submit your application:

  • complete the online application form (if required in the posting)
  • submit your resume and cover letter submitted to People and Culture as follows:
    • by e-mail at hr@peterborough.ca
    • by fax at 705-742-7021 or
    • in person/by mail at 500 George St. N., Peterborough, ON K9H 3R9

The deadline to submit your application is noon on the date the posting closes. You only need to use one method of submission. Visit the “How do I apply” page for further details.

Step 2: Interview and/or testing

If you're selected, you'll be contacted for an interview and/or testing.

  • note the place and time of the interview or test
  • request accommodation for disability, if required
  • bring a copy of your references including names and phone numbers – they will be checked if you're being considered for hire following the interview
  • if it is a temporary position, ask for the start and end dates
  • ask for information about the position, such as work location

At our interviews you can expect:

  • We typically conduct panel interviews of three to five people on the selection panel.
  • Interviews range in length, but are generally between 30 minutes and an hour.
  • You will be asked to talk about specific experiences that relate to the competencies and requirements for the job as outlined on the job advertisement.
  • We often use behavioural-based interview questions. These require detail with respect to the specific things you have said or done in your previous work and/or volunteer experiences.
  • Testing may be used, depending on the position. For example, you may be asked to verify your computer skills.

Step 3: Verification

If you are successful, we may give you a job offer that is conditional upon:

  • a reference check
  • a driver's licence check
  • a physical/functional abilities assessment
  • a police reference check
  • other certifications such as First Aid/CPR/AED, National Lifeguard Service (NLS), etc.

Step 4: Job offer

If you receive a job offer, review the written job offer in detail and ask questions before accepting and signing the paperwork. You will receive an orientation for your new position.
