Job Details

The focus and main duties of the Engineering Design & Construction Technologist/Inspector will be to complete detailed design and drawings for new and replacement infrastructure projects in the areas of storm and sanitary sewers, sidewalks and roads. Provide technical and administrative support in the preparation of final tender documents and for the review of engineering reports and drawings. The successful candidate may also be required, on a limited basis, to provide onsite inspection and oversight of City construction projects to ensure the projects are built in accordance with plans and specifications, completed on time, within set budget limits and following proper safety procedures. Recommend optimum solutions based on knowledge of site conditions, methods and available materials, time factors and budget constraints.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the knowledge and experience normally associated with the completion of a three-year college diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or related field and a minimum of four years previous experience in municipal engineering design and construction.  Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation is preferred.  Requires and individual with extensive experience in construction of storm sewer, sanitary sewer and roads, record keeping, and superior knowledge using Autodesk Civil 3D design software.  Must have knowledge of provincial and municipal policies and procedures related to engineering surveys and construction, the Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications and Drawings, the Ministry of Transportation Construction Manual and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Requires knowledge of construction inspection, contract administration and surveying layout skills, knowledge of construction specifications and ability to interpret contract drawings. Requires well-developed communications skills (written and spoken), analytical and problem-solving skills; and skill in preparing technical reports, clear and concise electronic/computerized records.  Must have a high level of proficiency in various software applications including MS Word, Excel, engineering design software and proficiency with total station, robotic and GPS surveying equipment. Requires a valid driver’s license, access to a personal vehicle and ability to operate a vehicle to fulfil the requirements of the job.
