Municipal Addressing By-Law (09-050)

“It’s not just a number;
It can save your life!”

The goal of the By-Law is to maintain a consistent system for the addressing of buildings to assist emergency services. Emergency dispatch systems rely on accurate civic addressing to support emergency response personnel.

In the By-Law you will find information related to municipal addressing activities including:

  • Definitions
  • Assignment of Municipal Numbers
  • Posting of Municipal Numbers
  • Standards for Municipal Numbers Signs
  • Work Performed by the City
  • Prohibitions
  • Severability
  • Offence
  • Short Title
  • Effective Date and Repeal

Modern day emergency dispatch systems rely on accurate civic addressing to support emergency response services. To fulfill this, the data must be complete and up to date. Many buildings do not have their primary municipal address posted and many do not have their rental unit addresses posted. This can cause a problem in an emergency situation when the responding Police, Fire or EMS staff cannot find the building or the entranceway.

Importance of Municipal Addressing System

Municipal properties can be difficult to locate without an easily understood addressing system.

The objectives of this By-Law are:
  • To ensure every occupied building has a unique address making it easy to identify and locate.
  • Improve services from local government and utility companies.
  • To provide Emergency Personnel a quick and effective way to locate addresses. With a municipal address, dispatch operators will instantly know the address where a call (land-line phones only) is being placed from.
Please refer to the following documents/links for more information on Municipal Addressing:
