Location: Front Foyer, City Hall

Notice of Public Open House
George Street Improvements - Hunter Street to Lake Street & Extension of Downtown Cycling Lanes

The Project

An Environmental Assessment for George Street between Sherbrooke Street and Perry Street was completed in 2015. The study looked at options to improve walking, cycling and driving along and across the street while also improving the ambiance, recognizing this is the southern gateway to the downtown. The Environmental Assessment included an extensive public consultation. The final concept approved by Council includes reallocating the existing street to include cycling lanes and left turn lanes, traffic signals at Dalhousie Street, new street trees, a landscaped median and two pedestrian refuge islands.

A public consultation on the concept for cycling lanes on George and Water Streets between Hunter Street and Sherbrooke Street and on Sherbrooke Street between George Street and Water Street was held in 2016. The concept approved by Council is the same as what was implemented this summer between Brock Street and Hunter Street. The concept maintains parking on both sides of the street and extends the cycling lanes to Sherbrooke Street. For Sherbrooke Street between George Street and Water Street, there will be an east-bound cycling lane, a west-bound cycling path separated from traffic by a wide landscaped median.

The purpose of this open house is to provide everyone interested in the project an opportunity to review the preliminary design plans, share their comments and discuss the project with City staff. The City has received funding from the Province of Ontario for this project under the Municipal Cycling Infrastructure Support Program and construction is planned for 2017.
