Notice of Public Meeting - Completing the Cycling Network on George Street and Water Street in Downtown Peterborough

Event date: Tuesday, April 05, 2016, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Location: Peterborough Public Library, Auditorium

Background

The City of Peterborough 2012 Comprehensive Map - Notice of Public Meeting - Completing the Cycling Network on George Street and Water Street
Transportation Plan recommends implementation of an expanded Bikeway Network that includes 95
projects. The rationale for providing enhanced
cycling infrastructure, which includes cycling lanes
and multi-use trails, is to encourage more people to ride bicycles more often, which can contribute to the City’s goal to reduce reliance on auto travel and to support the reduction of Greenhouse Gas
Emissions. People on bicycles feel safer and are
more likely to ride if infrastructure is provided that
separates bicycles and vehicles.

Cycling Lane Improvements Approved in 2015

In 2015, Council approved the following
improvements to the cycling lanes on George Street and Water Street:

  • Prohibiting parking in the existing cycling lanes (implemented)
  • Painting a 0.5 m buffer between the cycling lane and the vehicle lane to provide more separation between bicycles and vehicles (scheduled for spring 2016)
  • Extending the cycling lanes south to Hunter
Street, while maintaining parking adjacent to the new cycling lane south of McDonnel Street (scheduled for spring 2016).

The next project planned is to extend the cycling
lanes on George Street and Water Street from
Hunter Street south to Sherbrooke Street. The
concept that has been developed includes the short section of Sherbrooke Street between George
    Street and Water Street.

The City is seeking public input on the draft
concepts for these cycling lanes, including via the
    following public meeting.
