The Review
The City of Peterborough has several by-laws that regulate active forms of transportation. Administrative updates are required and requests for changes to the by-laws have been made from some user groups. As such, the following by-laws are now under review:
Chapter 729 of the Municipal Code (requirement for a bike license)
By-Law 09-164 – A By-Law to Prohibit Vehicles on Public Lands or Property in the City of Peterborough
By-Law 91-71 Traffic By-Law
Background
Staff have conducted research into potential options regarding the use of sidewalks and roads by various modes of travel, including: bicycling, in-line skating, roller skating, skateboarding, longboarding and e-bikes. Current by-laws prohibit all these modes on sidewalks and roads, except for bicycles and e-bikes, which are permitted on roads.
