Skating & Hockey Programs

The City of Peterborough, Recreation Division is pleased to offer the following Instructional Skating and Hockey Programs this Spring, Fall and Winter.

Northcrest Skating SchoolNorthcrest Skating School1

This program is for children ages 4 to 10 and is offered cooperatively with certified skating instructor Bonnie Lynn Martin-Porter.  The Northcrest Skating School emphasizes "Learn to Skate" instruction.  New skaters and beginners will increase their skills and interest in skating through the Northcrest Skating School.  

Nine 45 minute lessons make up a series and are held on Sundays, with three times to choose from. Children (and Parents) are required to wear a CSA approved helmet on the ice.

Power Skating Instruction

The Single most important skill for Hockey Players is skating.  There are 23 skills players need to move effectively on the ice.  Balance, power, agility, speed, and skills development are taught in this program with an emphasis on stride; the most important element in skating.  Parents are reminded that this program is not for beginner skaters.  Participants are required to have a minimum of 2 years of skating and hockey experience to register for this program. 

Full hockey dress, CSA approved helmet and stick are required. Karen Westby-Bulger is the Certified Power Skating Instructor.

Parent & Tot Skating LessonsParent & Tot

This program is for children ages 2 to 3 years old and is offered cooperatively with certified skating instructor Bonnie Lynn Martin-Porter.  This program is an excellent introduction to ice skating for youngsters.  Games, music and skating aids will ensure a fun learning environment. Children will be taught to stand on their own, fall down and get back up on their own and basic forward skating skills.  It is mandatory for children to have one parent or guardian accompany them on the ice at all times.  Ten 45-minute lessons make up a session that is held on Wednesday mornings.

Both children and parents are required to wear a CSA approved helmet while on the ice.

Lorne Eakins Hockey School

Lorne Eakins Hockey The Lorne Eakins Hockey School will provide a fun and positive introduction to hockey that will spark a love for the game!  This 4-week program teaches the basics of playing hockey.  Instruction is provided by the local Currie Tire Hockey Team and is open to both boys and girls ages 5 to 11 years.  Full hockey dress, CSA approved helmet and stick are required.

  • Call the Recreation Division at 705-742-7777 ext. 1873 and register over the phone.  Payment by credit card is accepted.
  • Drop by the Recreation Division at 210 Wolfe Street between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm and register in person.  Drop by the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre at 775 Brealey Drive during their current facility hours posted on their and register in person.
  • Register Online through recServe. If you choose this option you must have an account pin # and barcode.  If you do not have an account pin # or barcode simply call the Recreation Division to set up your account information.
