Aquatic Leadership & Certifications

Launch your aquatic career!

If you are interested in becoming an aquatic instructor or a lifeguard, the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre offers certification programs that can get you on your way. 

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
This course will prepare candidates to instruct the Red Cross Water Safety program. 

  • Pre-requisite: Participants must be 15 years of age and have completed Bronze Cross or equivalent.
  • Note: Full attendance is mandatory, and an additional 15 hours of assisted swimming instruction must be scheduled. There is also an online component of this course.

National Lifeguard Service Re-certification
This re-certification course is for lifeguards who need to re-certify their qualifications. Certifications must not have expired longer than two years. Course re-certification takes approximately 6 – 7 hours depending on student competencies. Registrants should be prepared to stay for the required course length of time, however should the examiner feel the re-certification is finished, an early dismissal may occur.

Red Cross Instructor Re-certification
This course is designed for Red Cross Swimming. Instructors who require the qualification to be re-certified. Certification must not have expired longer than two years.

- Prerequisite: NLS or Bronze Cross. 
- Minimum age 16

Standard First Aid
- With level “C” CPR and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training
