Riverview Park and Zoo

Spider Monkey clinging to branchThis is a unique recreational facility offering attractions for all ages. Located just north of Downtown Peterborough. The zoo is open year round during daylight hours with free admission and free parking. CAZA accredited with a collection of approx. 150 animals. There is also a large children's playground, splash pad, and picnic areas that are open during the summer months.

Free 9-Hole Disc (Frisbee) Golf Course

Man playing frisbee in a park by the waterLocated right next to the Peterborough Riverview Park and Zoo. This is a great free activity for the whole family. Bring your Frisbee and play the 9-hole course. The game is played by the same rules as golf but instead of hitting the ball into the hole, you throw the Frisbee into a specially designed basket.

Canada Day Parade

A great way to celebrate Canada’s birthday with the Peterborough Canada Day Parade. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate Canada Day on July 1st each year. The preparade ceremonies begin at 10:00 am and include music, speeches, and birthday cake at the front of City Hall at 500 George Street north. Santa Claus Parade

This is a holiday parade sponsored by the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough. The parade involves service clubs, businesses, and many community organizations to celebrate the holiday season. The parade travels south on George St. starting at City Hall heading toward the Memorial Centre. Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

Celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day in Peterborough involves attending the fun filled parade. The fun starts at City Hall and goes all the way to Del Crary Park.

Ribfest

Ribfest is a huge BBQ held in Millennium Park in July. There are lots of BBQ ribs and microbreweries set up as well as live music. This event is where professional "ribbers" come to compete. Come and sample some of the best sauces in North America and vote for your favourite team in the Peoples Choice Awards. Peterborough Snofest Winter Carnival

This is a week-long event filled with a variety of activities such as Bingo and Euchre tournaments for seniors, Snopitch tournament, Snofest Idol and much more. The final event is the Carnival on the Canal; this is a day full of fun for the whole family. This is held at the Peterborough Museum and Archives and the canal below the Peterborough Lift Locks. Habitat for Humanity

Man on roof fixing soffitsHabitat for Humanity Peterborough and District (Habitat) is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to improving the lives of economically disadvantaged persons through home ownership and to the belief that decent, affordable housing is a basic human need. It is their mission to eliminate poverty housing in the Greater Peterborough and District Area in partnership with volunteers, donors, sponsors and the homeowners themselves. Anyone who has left over building supplies that are not going to be in use Habitat for Humanity will come and pick them up free of charge as a donation to the work that they do for our community. Routine Immunization Clinic

Free Market Collective

A free market in the basement of Sadleir House, located at 751 George St. North. Choose from a large selection of clothing, books, shoes, music, toys, furniture, electronics, art and so much more. Downtown Farmers Market

Couple buying fruit in a marketThe Farm Gate Sales Association hosts the Downtown Peterborough Farmers Market located at the Louis Parking Lot on Charlotte Street. It takes place May to October. This is a small, high quality farmer’s market selling only locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and other farm produce as well as handmade crafts. Dragon Boat Festival

The dragon boating experience has been described as a "floating support group" for women with breast cancer.  It all began with a study involving one boat and 25 women.  In 1996, Dr. Don MacKenzie, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, launched Abreast in a Boat.  The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for the community to come together and take part in an exciting event for a great cause.  The fundraising even sponsored by Survivors Abreast and their partners is to help raise awareness, support research and improve local facilities.  This event is held each year in June.  For more information contact www.survivorsabreast.com

Multicultural Day - Canada Day Event

On July 1st in Del Crary Park, the New Canadians Centre hosts a celebration that includes stage performances, and annual international food tent and craft vendors celebrating Canada's and Peterborough's diversity.  Children can enjoy the facepainting, henna tattoos and field games at the Kids Zone.  The event provides food vendors with reusable plates and utensils to reduce the environmental impact of Canada Day.  Event attendees are encouraged to bring their own dishes and cutlery to the event.  The event takes place from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  For more information contact 705-743-0882 or www.nccpeterborough.ca 

Civic Awards

City Council recognizes outstanding individuals, teams or groups for their notable community contribution for the previous year in Peterborough.  The event is held in June of each year.  For more information on nominating a person or attending the event, contact 705-742-7777 ext. 1820.  

Doors Open Peterborough

In 2000, the City of Toronto launched the first Doors Open event in North America.  In 2002, the Ontario Heritage Trust launched Doors Open Ontario, the first province-wide event of its kind in Canada.  (2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of Doors Open Ontario).  The Doors Open concept continues to spread across North America with events now being held in Newfoundland, Alberta, Massachusetts, Western New York State, New York City and Denver.

Every year, Doors Open Ontario attracts large crowds across Ontario.  From April to October, residents and visitors are invited to discover first-hand Ontario's hidden heritage treasures, some of which have never been open to the public.

Since the program was launched in 2002, nearly 4 million visits have been made to heritage sites participating in this exciting initative.  Doors Open Ontario, now considered a cultural phenomenon, will continue in 2011 with hundreds of communities participating across the province.
