Changes to Your Benefits

As part of the 2013 Ontario budget, the provincial government announced a number of changes to social assistance programs. The following information sheets provide detailed information about these changes. If you have any questions about these changes please speak to your case manager or employment counsellor.

Financial Assistance

If you qualify, Ontario Works can provide you with money to help you cover the cost of your basic needs (i.e. food) & housing costs. The amount of money you may receive from Ontario Works will depend on your:

  • family size
  • income
  • assets
  • and housing costs.

Mandatory Benefits

Ontario Works provides a number of benefits for you and your dependents. 

  • Full time employment benefits
  • Other employment & employment assistance benefits
  • Participation Expenses
  • Dental Care
  • Vision Care
  • Drug Benefits
  • Extended Employment Health Benefits

Discretionary Benefits

  • Each municipality determines which benefits they will offer from a range of health and non-health items and services.
  • Peterborough City Council determines what items and services will be offered to people in receipt of social assistance. 
  • Benefits are provided on a case-by-case basis.

Sport & Recreation Subsidy for Children and Youth

  • The City of Peterborough, in partnership with many community organizations, offers subsidy options to those who qualify. Read our Brochure for more information.

Deskside Orientation

A Desktop Orientation presentation is completed with all new applicants during the verification interview. It provides a brief overview of the Ontario Works program highlighting the client's rights and responsibilities and information regarding employment and financial assistance.
