Feature of the Month

Transitional Child Benefit

This benefit provides financial assistance if you are receiving social assistance, you have children under 18 and:

  • you do not receive the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) or the National Child Benefit Supplement (NCBS) or
  • you receive less than the maximum OCB or NCBS for any of your children.

These are supplements issued along with the Canada Child Benefit. The amount of Transition Child Benefit you may receive depends upon how much money you get for OCB and NCBS.

The Transitional Child Benefit must be repaid once you receive your lump sum child tax benefit. This happens through deductions from your Ontario Works Assistance for up to three months following a retroactive OCB and or NCBS payment. Some people choose not to receive the Transition Child Benefit for that reason.

Please talk to your caseworker with any questions about the Transition Child Benefit - how it's calculated and how it's repaid.
