Postal Strike

Effective immediately, Ontario Works cheques, direct bank deposit statements or letters will be not be mailed. Clients can pick these up at the Social Services office, 178 Charlotte St., Peterborough (In the Charlotte Mews) during the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monthly income statements can be dropped off or faxed to 705-742-0542.

We will do our best to communicate changes in entitlement by phone and encourage you to call if you are waiting on a decision. Staff will return calls within 24 hours. Direct bank deposit payments will not be impacted. Clients who do not currently receive direct bank deposit for their payments are strongly encouraged to speak with their case manager and sign up for this service.

Unlocking Hope Series:

“Suzie” is a survivor. 

She is a survivor of domestic abuse, but she was also charged with assault when she fought back. She was badly beaten, scared and left with her own criminal record when she fled the relationship. She went through years of counselling and unemployment and needed to apply for social assistance.

She met her Ontario Works employment counsellor in March of last year. Looking for work was a challenge for Suzie because she often didn't have the “right” qualifications and her criminal record got in the way.
