Rent Supplement

  • 308 rent-geared-to-income units in privately owned buildings (City/County)
  • Commercial Rent Supplement Units
  • Strong Communities Rent Supplement Units
  • Program delivered by PHC via Service Agreement

The Rent Supplement Program provides eligible Social Housing tenants with rent-geared-to-income (RGI) accommodation in privately owned buildings. In Peterborough, approximately 308 households receive assistance through the Rent Supplement Program.

What is Rent Supplement?

A rent supplement is a subsidy that is paid to private landlords by the City of Peterborough to cover the difference between the market rent for the unit and the amount a tenant can pay based on their income.

For example, if an RGI tenant can pay $500/month (based on approximately 30% of his/her gross monthly household income), and the landlord charges $750/month, the landlord receives the $250 difference from the City of Peterborough.

If you are a private landlord who is looking for more information on the Rent Supplement Program, please contact the Peterborough Housing Corporation.

Individuals and households that are interested in applying for rent-geared-to-income housing will need to follow the standard application process for Social Housing. Housing Access Peterborough to learn more.

Housing Allowance

Interested landlords must complete an application to participate in the Rent Supplement/Housing Allowance component of the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program (AHP). Selected landlords will receive funding from The City of Peterborough to bridge the difference between the market rent and what the household can afford to pay as determined by the Service Manager (City of Peterborough).

The Rent Supplement/Housing Allowance component of the AHP provides access to affordable housing in rental markets with high vacancy rates.

Applications and additional information are available from The Peterborough Housing Corporation, at 526 McDonnel St., Peterborough, On K9H 0A6. Phone: 705-742-0439. Business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  A copy of Housing Allowance FAQ's is available online.
