Housing
CANADA-ONTARIO AFFORDABLE HOMEOWNERSHIP ASSISTANCE LOANS ~ 2010
“The Housing Division sustains and enhances its portfolio of subsidized housing, promotes options to increase the supply of affordable housing and supports community planning for housing and related services.”
Vision
To enhance life in the City and County of Peterborough through community partnerships that deliver affordable, cost-effective and appropriate housing.
Mandate
The Housing Division administers the social housing portfolio for the City and County of Peterborough. As Service Manager for Housing, the City is not a housing provider but oversees the operations of approximately 22 publicly-funded housing providers (including the Peterborough Housing Corporation). Additionally, the Division supports community development initiatives that promote the supply of and access to affordable housing, including the Affordable Housing Action Committee (AHAC), and the Housing Resource Centre (HRC). In 2003, the Housing Division conducted a comprehensive Needs Analysis for the City and County of Peterborough which concluded that the demand for affordable housing exceeds the supply. The Housing Progress Report(2006) reported that the need for affordable housing continues to grow.
The City of Peterborough, along with many municipalities across Canada, has identified affordable housing as a priority issue. As a show of leadership in 2001, the City of Peterborough developed an Affordable Housing Strategy. The goal of the strategy was to stimulate the development of affordable housing and to complement the City’s social housing responsibilities. To date, 19 new projects (totaling 487 units) are either occupied, under construction or are at the approval/design stages.
The City of Peterborough will be refreshing its “Taking Charge Strategy” to bridge the current successes of the Affordable Housing Program with the longer-term housing needs. The refreshed strategy will provide a vision beyond the immediate housing affordability issues in the community, addressing policy and growth management, urban design and re-urbanization, community infrastructure, sustainability and various accessibility barriers.
