Waste Water Treatment Plant

The City of Peterborough Waste Water Treatment Plant is a secondary treatment facility with advanced chemical phosphorus removal. The Plant is rated by the MOE as a class IV Sewage Treatment Plant - the highest rated level for such a facility.

The design capacity is 68,200 m3/day.

The main components of the Plant are:

  • Raw sewage lift station
  • Preliminary treatment (grit removal facility and screen facility)
  • Primary treatment – 8 primary clarifiers and pumping gallery for primary sludge
  • Digestion Facility – presently 3 units are in service
  • Secondary treatment (Biological treatment) – includes two plants (plant 1 & 2).

Biological Treatment:

  • Aeration Tanks
  • Blower Gallery
  • Pumping Gallery
  • Final Clarifiers
  • Final Effluent Disinfection – UV disinfection was added in 2003 to achieve non-toxic effluent criteria.
