Environmental Protection

The Environmental Protection Division operates the City's Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the 11 pumping stations and forcemains used to convey sanitary sewage to the WWTP. Through the Environmental Monitoring Program, the Division enforces the Sewer Use By-Law and regulations as they pertain to the City and offers certified and accredited laboratory services for both internal and external clients.  The Division also operates and maintains one of Peterborough's major tourist attractions, the Centennial Fountain. For further information call  742-7777 - ext 2600, or visit us at 425 Kennedy Road.

Information on Biosolids

The Environmental Monitoring  Program (EMP) staff manage the biosolids program. Biosolids are the treated solid portion of the waste from the sewage treatment plant.  Biosolids are land applied as fertilizer. Spreading of biosolids is regulated by the MOE. EMP staff liaises with the farmers and the MOE to obtain Certificates of Approval for the application of biosolids. EMP staff also coordinate with the contractor to insure that regulations are being followed during the spreading of the biosolids. Since 2004, the biosolids program has operated under the Nutrient Management Act and Regulations. Below are some important links to learn more about the new Nutrient Management Act.

Please feel free to contact the Environmental Protection Division at pdevlin@peterborough.ca if you have any questions or concerns.
