One element which poses a challenge is management of spontaneous, unaffiliated volunteers (i.e. citizens from neighboring communities and local residents not affected by the disaster). Volunteers often arrive on-site ready to assist and their services may be underutilized, and in some cases, problematic to professional emergency responders.
Volunteering is a valuable part of every healthy community. Volunteers come from all segments of society and often provide essential services. Most people have the potential to contribute strength and resources in times of emergencies or disaster's.
The United Way, in partnership with the City and County of Peterborough, Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Peterborough City/County Health Unit and Peterborough EMS have implemented an Emergency Volunteer Registry Software Program. This program is designed to track, manage, and assign volunteer services where they can best be utilized. The priority of volunteer activity is assistance to others. When this spontaneous activity is well managed, it has a positive affect on the volunteers themselves and thus contributes to the healing process of both individuals and the community.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please read the "Expectations and Standards of Conduct"; answer the questions on the "Volunteer Self-Assessment"; complete the "Emergency Volunteer Registry" application and the "Release of Information" form.
Upon completion please forward the "Emergency Volunteer Registry" application and "Release of Information" form to United Way as per page 4 of the application.
