'Peterborough' Daylily
In 2005, Peterborough celebrated its 100th Anniversary. To recognize the event, the Peterborough Communities in Bloom Committee adopted a centennial flower. The flower is a member of the Hemerocallis Genus.
Throughout the City's natural areas are found orange 'pioneer' daylilies. The flower selected is hybridized from this original parent stock. Selection and registration with the American Hemerocallis Society under the name 'Peterborough' was managed by one of Ontario’s finest daylily gardeners, Henry Lorraine of "We're in the Hayfield Now'. Henry’s garden in Orono is the site of a premier, Daylily garden. His daylilies have been profiled in 'Chatelaine' and many horticultural 'trade' magazines. Peterborough has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Henry as a key supplier of daylily stock.
The 'Peterborough' daylily will be propagated by the City’s Horticulture staff and made available to the community for planting-out in private, commercial and municipal gardens as heirloom treasures.
The City celebrated the Peterborough Centennial Daylily in art. Edwin Mathews, a renowned Peterborough artist volunteered to paint the Peterborough Daylily.
