Arts, Culture & Heritage
The City of Peterborough has an incredibly vibrant arts, culture and heritage community with levels of activity not typically found in communities of comparable size.
According to the latest cultural mapping exercise, the city is home to:
- 42 heritage, education and umbrella organizations
- 142 arts and cultural organizations
- hundreds of professional cultural workers, many with provincial, national and international reputations
- over 350 local businesses relating to cultural activity
There is not a single individual in our community who is not touched by our local arts, culture and heritage sector in some way on a daily basis.
In October of 2011 the City of Peterborough was awarded the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership, the Heritage Canada Foundation’s most prestigious award. Named in honour of His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, the prize is awarded annually to a municipality that has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to the conservation of its historic places. The award was presented to Council by Natalie Bull, the Executive Director of Heritage Canada at the November 14, 2011 meeting of City Council.
