Chain of Office

The gold chain of office is made up of separate medallions, each medallion engraved with the name of a Peterborough Mayor. At the front of the chain is a larger medallion in the form of a pendant, upon which is Peterborough's City Crest.

On the occasion of the opening of the new City Hall in 1951, Mr. Gordon Monkman, at his own expense and on behalf of his wife, purchased the Chain of Office and invested Mayor Maxwell J. Swanston with what has become the Official Insignia of the Office of the Mayor of the City of Peterborough. Mr. Monkman performed this symbolic act at the Swearing-In-Ceremony for every Mayor thereafter until his death in 1977.

Born in Bradford, England in 1894, Mr. Monkman came to Peterborough in 1920. He served as a member of City Council from 1959 to 1964 and again in 1966, and also served a term as a Peterborough Utilities Commissioner from 1967 to 1968. Mr. Monkman's dedication to the civic affairs of the community will be remembered with each Inaugural of the Mayor of the City of Peterborough.
