Poverty Reduction
Where you can get help for:
What is the Mayor's Action Committee on Poverty doing?
In early 2007, Mayor Paul Ayotte created the Poverty Reduction Task Force to identify issues within the community. After completing its work, the Task Force turned its work over to a group of citizens from a broad range of organizations and perspectives, calling themselves the Mayor's Action Committee on Poverty Reduction.
After a year of working on systemic issues, the Action Committee turned its mandate from the Mayor's Office to community leadership in a concentrated effort to engage more people and organizations in the work of alleviating and eliminating poverty.
Since the community took ownership of this issue, the renamed "Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network" (PPRN) has engaged more than 100 individuals to work on projects to reduce and alleviate poverty. That network includes business leaders, educators, healthcare providers and various organizations, reaching deeply into several communities within our community.
The vision of the PPRN remains the same as its predecessors: To inspire everyone to ease and reduce poverty. Too many people live in poverty in Peterborough, and it's time to change that. Let's start now.
