Mayor's Office
MESSAGE FROM MAYOR D. PAUL AYOTTE
Welcome to the City of Peterborough website and the webpage for the Office of Mayor. I hope you will find the City’s website helpful and informative.
As we begin a new year, allow me to take a few moments to reflect on our accomplishments and offer some of the many projects that will garner the City’s time and efforts in 2010.
During 2009, the City opened its doors to a newly renovated and expanded Police Headquarters. Council was very pleased to update its Peterborough Municipal Airport Master Plan and welcomed a Federal-Provincial-Municipal funding partnership that will see $21 million in runway and airport improvements in 2010.
Council commenced the process of updating its Transportation and Official Plans and submitted its response to the Province’s Places to Grow legislation. The Little Lake Master Planning process was also undertaken, and Market Hall underwent a substantial restoration and facelift.
A number of bridge rehabilitation projects were undertaken, with road re-surfacing, sanitary sewer, sidewalk installation and trail links/improvements also completed. Preliminary engineering work on the Hunter Street Bridge and the new Hospital Access Road were carried out, with construction planned in 2010. The City continues to partner with our neighbour, the County of Peterborough, to create an energy-from-waste generating system at the landfill site.
2009 proved to be a challenging year, with confidence in the economy shaken and a few long-standing corporate entities in the City announcing closures. Amidst this uncertainty, we also had other businesses unveiling plans for expansions and new business – GE Canada announced the establishment of the GE Centre of Excellence and Pepsi/QTG (Quaker Oats) announced a new product line and employment opportunities. We are also excited to see the Trent Rapids power station coming on line, and I had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon at a number of smaller new business openings throughout the year. I join with council in wishing all of our corporate entities much success as they garner their share of the market.
As we look ahead, Council has recently adopted the 2010 Budget and provided direction on the projects, services and activities for Peterborough. One project that I would particularly like to mention is the Wall of Honour project where veterans from Peterborough and the surrounding area who served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War will be honoured. This project was initiated a number of years ago and we hope to unveil the Wall of Honour in late-2010. The City will also welcome two larger gatherings to our community – the Canada-wide Science Fair and International Dragon Boat Festival in June 2010.
2010 will continue to see staff and Council focusing on project completion and responding to community and infrastructure needs.
The City is very fortunate to have very professional and knowledgeable staff members to welcome and assist you. I am most pleased to continue serving the residents of this wonderful community of Peterborough and would welcome your visit to City Hall.

Are You . . .
Are you, a member of your family or a friend celebrating a 90th Birthday or a 50th, 60th or even a 70th Wedding Anniversary? The Mayor would be pleased to recognize this milestone occasion. Please call the Mayor's Office at 742-7777, extension 1870 to share details of your event.
Mayor's Chain Of Office
The gold chain of office is made up of separate medallions, each medallion engraved with the name of a Peterborough Mayor. At the front of the chain, is a larger medallion in the form of a pendant, upon which is Peterborough's City Crest.
On the occasion of the opening of the new City Hall in 1951, Mr. Gordon Monkman, at his own expense and on behalf of his wife, purchased the Chain of Office and invested Mayor Maxwell J. Swanston with what has become the Official Insignia of the Office of the Mayor of the City of Peterborough. Mr. Monkman performed this symbolic act at the Swearing-In-Ceremony for every Mayor thereafter until his death in 1977.
Born in Bradford, England in 1894, Mr. Monkman came to Peterborough in 1920. He served as a member of City Council from 1959 to 1964 and again in 1966, and also served a term as a Peterborough Utilities Commissioner from 1967 to 1968. Mr. Monkman's dedication to the civic affairs of the community will be remembered with each Inaugural of the Mayor of the City of Peterborough.
